Chateau Pape Clement

The color is intensely, strongly beautiful, with slight brown tinges. The intense nose currently lets nothing through but woody aromas, after a phase of beautiful complexity in which coffee, blackberry, spices and black cherry combine. After the supple and woody attack, the mid-palate seems very fleshy, concentrated, of great richness, it all offering a beautiful complexity to be tasted. The finish closes up, but preserves great refinement. It will take at least 4 years of waiting for this superb wine to come out of this phase.

Wine Advocate

The profound 2000 (a blend of equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon) continues to put on weight. An opaque purple color is accompanied by stunning aromas of wood smoke, cocoa, black currant and cherry liqueur, coffee, scorched earth, and new oak. A wine of extraordinary concentration, elegance, and complexity, it is one of the finest Pape Clements of the last three decades, but look out ... the 2001 may be even better! Only 55% of the production made it into the final blend. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025.

Score: 95. —Robert Parker, April 2003.

Wine Enthusiast

A rich, open modern style of wine, full of new wood flavors. The fruit is solid, chunky and square, while the tannins are ripe and generous. This will develop relatively quickly, over the next 10 years.

Score: 94. —Roger Voss, June 01, 2003.

Wine Spectator

Subtle aromas of blackberries and cherries, with hints of chocolate. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a ripe fruit, chocolate aftertaste. A solid Pape Clément. Best after 2010.

Score: 92. —James Suckling, March 31, 2003.
